Last week we went over our social networking guidelines at school. This morning I wrote on a student's paper a quick little anecdote from my own childhood after reading a piece she wrote about a struggle she was going through. Was this too personal? Or was this, as I was trained, recognizing a moment to connect with a student, because connected students work harder and learn more?

Educators have been expected to be superheroes for a while now, fighting poverty, dysfunction, immense curriculums, and time. And I certainly am not condoning inappropriate behavior with or around children. But with policies like this, I am afraid to buy beer at the grocery store or wear clothes that break dress code out in public on hot days. Last summer at my class reunion, there was a group photo taken, and I made everybody in the picture put down their drinks. They thought I was crazy. None of them were teachers. But when I was visiting with a group of teacher friends this summer, a group shot was taken and without any word, everybody slipped their drinks to the back. Ah yes, they had had the training too. Don't get me wrong--I shouldn't be able to keep a flask in my desk or tell students about drinking escapades (neither of which I do--let me be clear: this is all hypothetical). But on my own time with my own friends, I shouldn't be held to a higher standard Ralph Lauren Polo Online of conduct than the average person--because really, sometimes, I just want to be an average person. But while the rest of the population gets to relax into their average-ness (even President Obama can drink beer in public without losing his job), teachers are expected to live their average lives behind closed doors.

Great post and I agree with a majority of it. Both my parents were educators. My dad taught in Boston and my mom in my hometown. Life was easier for my dad as he had little interaction while my mom (beloved) was stopped everywhere by current and former students (which on the whole she loved). She was desperate to get away for the summer for that very reason.

My good friend is a police officer in the town her was raised. He moved because of all the BS that arose when he was off-duty. Moving saved his job,marriage and sanity . Perhaps that is an unfortunate piece of the puzzle you may have to consider in a quest for a normal life?

I can absolutely relate to this, Angie. I "teach" women at a prison in Boston, and boundaries are definitely an issue. I of course would never be their facebook friends with them, and I know better than to ever tell them where I live, it is hard to draw that line about who I really am as a person.

Growing up my mother didn't have a lot of purses. In fact she had three distinct purses. Maybe more, but three stick out in my memory. One was red, with a long skinny strap. The strap was so long, I loved to run around with it across my shoulders. Another was a classic shape, small and black with a shoulder strap and gold buckles. The last one was a big navy blue, almost a briefcase size bag. This was the carry-all that came on every trip and seemed to be bottomless. It carried everything. At the time I didn't know it, but I loved the classic Coach feel of each and every bag.

She must be a person of HIGH CALIBER to have such a magnificent handbag!" What I need is a bag to carry all my stuff so that I may function in my life.
